Timothy H Rice

Timothy Rice is an associate professor in the Unruh School of Character in Leadership at the University of Jamestown (UJ) in Jamestown, ND. He has extensive experience in graduate and doctoral education. Rice holds a Doctor of Sports Management (DSM) in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy (USSA) in Daphne, AL, a Master of Sport Science (MSS) from USSA, and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Physical Education from Mobile College in Mobile, AL.

Dr. Rice has over 35 years of experience working in leadership, including being a head college and high school coach in basketball, golf, cross country, track and field, and soccer in the United States and in Ireland. Many of his former student-athletes are now coaching and teaching across the country. The coaches who mentored him through the years have won nearly 3,000 games and have been honored with numerous Hall of Fame inductions.

He also has over 20 years of university teaching experience. He comes to the University of Jamestown after serving at the University of Arizona Global Campus since 2018. There, he led the Doctor of Psychology academic program as well as the Sport and Performance Psychology specialization. Many of Dr. Rice’s students are serving across the country at the professional, collegiate, and high school levels of sport as well as in sport psychology consulting roles. Additionally, many are now teaching at the university level in sport management and sport and performance psychology.

He has served as a technical consultant for Basketball Ireland, the governing body over the sport in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, since 2015. He served on the Elite Performance Committee (EPC) with Basketball Ireland, the committee that governs all Ireland national basketball teams, for 7 years and served as the chairperson for nearly 3 years. He consults in Eastern Europe with Admirals Basketball Academy, a Christian basketball ministry in the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. In addition, his “Holding the Ladder in Sport and Leadership” podcast is considered one of the top 5 sport leadership podcasts in the world.

His research interests include leadership in sport and sport performance. In his spare time, Dr. Rice enjoys traveling and running. He is a nationally competitive senior track and field athlete, long distance runner, and racewalker. He also runs 10Ks, half marathons, and marathons locally, nationally, and internationally. He was married to his late wife Dr. Candy Rice, an adjunct faculty member at UJ in the Master of Arts in Leadership (MAL) program, for nearly 27 years before her untimely passing in January 2022.

Description

This course is the capstone experience of the program. Students will begin formulating ideas for their project during the first year. Students will design a project with the potential for implementation. The project will demonstrate and utilize skills and ideas from the coursework. The projects can be either theoretical or tied to an existing organization’s mission.
